Getting Sworn In

My entrée into government was launched when I was approached by a man running for mayor. He asked me to run his campaign because he’d seen how impactful my marketing was for multiple clients, and he knew I’d work relentlessly. I did. He won. Big. A year later I joined his administration as Communications Director, serving for three years before being promoted to the City of Bloomington, Indiana’s, first female Deputy Mayor.

Working closely with the Mayor and 15 excellent Department Heads & staff, I helped strengthen Bloomington’s vitality and enhance the 750-person organization’s outcomes by: 

  • Introducing, directing and developing every aspect of the City’s first-ever strategic plan, which provided a powerful vision and guidance for staff and a clear vision for the public and other vital stakeholders. Leaders from several other cities contacted my team and me to ask who had developed our strategic plan.
     

  • Developing the Strategic Task Action Report (STAR) system to track progress of the strategic plan’s major initiatives, which served as a tool that boosted organization, accountability and communication.
     

  • Assembling and leading a team that identified $6 million in innovations, which empowered all levels of staff to contribute their insights and develop new ideas to produce far greater outcomes with impact, collaboration and creativity.

  • Reinventing the budgeting process to make it cross-departmental, zero-based and tied directly to strategic goals so that the link among vision, strategy, funding, decision making and talent contribution was maximized.
     
  • Setting policy, managing the Office of the Mayor and collaborating with staff to ensure the Mayor's vision and the City's top goals and projects were realized, streamlining and bringing clarity to the process.
     

  • Developing and directing the Mayor’s Strategic Initiatives: Community Commerce, Community Condition, Community Collaboration and Community Character.
     

  • Co-founding the City's award-winning entertainment and arts district with our economic development team.
     

  • Introducing a team approach to City management to eliminate silos, which dramatically enhanced organizational outcomes and boosted staff empowerment, performance, morale and camaraderie. 
     

  • Naming the national award-winning B-Line Trail; designing its logo, 16-ton blue diamond bridge and amenities; and conceptualizing and naming Plaza OneA as a free speech zone. 
     

  • Spearheading the City’s award-winning Be Active Bloomington wellness campaign, which delivered strategy, funding, tools and visibility to the value placed on organizational and community-wide health and wellness initiatives.
     

  • Serving on the Governing Board of ACHIEVE, a nationwide campaign designed to make the healthy choice the easy choice throughout the community.
     

  • Conceptualizing the quality of life website, Everybody’s Bloomington, which highlighted City government successes and community amenities and opportunities to help strengthen economic development and tourism.
     

  • Creating a community leader campaign, which made animal care a community responsibility and increased local animal shelter adoptions by 35%.

Career Prep Students

After 9 years in City government I embraced the knowledge I’d gained in terms of leadership, communications, strategy and the importance of doing meaningful work and focused my attention on helping individuals thrive.

 

I embraced mindfulness and became a certified coach and teacher, helping hundreds of individuals identify, prepare for, land and excel in work they love. I also taught 21 courses at Indiana University, teaching what I know best: PR for Nonprofits and Career Success Preparation for The Media School and Citizenship & Careers for The Political & Civic Engagement Program.
